Preface
“Picture Walls” for “Fighting” — For the Ongoing Exhibition “Picture Walls”

An exhibition may be a retrospective of history. Or, it can be a scene for collective creation. “Picture Walls” is a large exhibition and performance presented by instructors from CAFA Department of Mural Painting. It’s a novel form of exhibition that connects the history of creation, while also elaborating on the happening of creation. Here in this exhibition, walls are intersected with walls and paths are intertwined with paths. As each move is taken, each view is transformed. Among the vibrant feast of murals arises a visionary fantasy, in which instructors hold the mural painting brushes with students and the public interacts actively with the artists. “Picture Walls” demonstrates the core value of mural painting as a kind of public art — the nature of cultural construction for the public.

The long history of mural painting has been recorded in the history of human society. Specifically, mural painting has left significant marks in the history of Chinese art. To follow the trend of reform and opening up policy since 1978, CAFA was among the first to set up the Mural Painting Major in its contemporaries. Since then, from Studio of Mural Painting to Department of Mural Painting, generations of CAFAs have explored and practiced the dream of “Renaissance  of Mural Painting in China”. They have studied rich historical records of Chinese ancient mural painting, learnt from various cultures, and created a significant amount of works with all kinds of motifs and styles. Their academic and artistic works have lit our times and have represented our national spirits, cultural ideals and a wide range of social realities.

“Picture Walls” presents a large amount of documents and images to show the great contribution the instructors and students from CAFA Department of Mural Painting have made to the revival of mural painting in modern China. It’s also a miniature of the development of modern mural painting in China, through which the aura of humanism and the gleam of creativity has immersed every important historical stage. The instructors from the Department all have rich experience in studying or creating mural painting. A public performance of painting the murals in the exhibition “Picture Walls”, based on various conceptions, motifs and languages of expression of CAFA instructors and students, is not only a challenge to their competence, but also an access for the public to be directly involved with the myth of the creation of a mural painting. Besides, letting instructors and students to interact and create works together publicly represents the character of CAFA’s teaching method — the reciprocal enlightenment of “teaching” and “learning”.

Nowadays, mural painting is faced with a promising future in China. As the economy and the public cultural service is fast developing, the recognition and need for mural painting is increasing among the public. The issue of how to fulfil the public function of mural painting and how to guide the public aesthetic appreciation awaits our attention. “Picture Walls” brings the process of creation into the art museum. In this way, it attracts public attention and suggests the value of mural painting as a contemporary culture. Moreover, it stands for the firm belief of CAFA in the revival of mural painting in China, that is —

Facing the walls, the variety of times arises from the strokes;
Fighting at best, for the glorious future of murals in China.
